International Conference, Berlin, June 21-22, 2007 KNOWLEDGE BY NETWORKING Digitising Culture in Germany and Europe This international conference in Berlin will explore the
current state of digitisation in the worlds of culture and scholarship. The conference
will focus on diverse initiatives in the field of digitisation across Europe, addressing
a series of underlying questions. The European portal, MICHAEL (www.michael-culture.org),
stands for Europe-wide cooperation and the enhanced accessibility of digital collections.
The MICHAEL portal will be further enhanced through the contributions of eleven additional
nations, each of which is bundling national offerings with a view toward greater European
cooperation. An additional topic of the conference is how small and large organisations
collaborate in digital networking initiatives and how they can best profit from digital portals. How
exactly do synergies of knowledge emerge through cooperation? How can the collections of
larger institutions enrich smaller, until now scattered collections, thereby enhancing their
importance? In the natural sciences, the exchange of research results and sources in
international collaborative ventures is established practise. Lessons learned in the
natural sciences should provide encouragement and impetus to tomorrow's digital initiatives
in the realms of culture and scholarship.
